Blog Happy September, For this month’s blog, I wanted to blog about one of my favorite films of all time, The Battle of Algiers . I wanted to talk about The Battle of Algiers because this year is the 60th Anniversary of the film’s release, as it was released on August 31, 1966 at the Venice Film Festival, released on September 9, 1966 in Italy, but was released in the U.S. on September 20, 1967. The film was co-written and directed by Italian filmmaker Gillo Pontecorvo. I also know what you’re thinking, why this film? It’s not a Nollywood film, nor does it focus on Nigeria, or West Africa, but focuses on North Africa. That’s true, but personally for me, this film is probably my favorite mainstream film that focuses on Africa, plus as a Nigerian and knowing the history of colonization in Africa, we can relate to the struggle of fighting back against the colonizers, whereas the Algerians fought back against the French, we fought back against the British.
