Happy November,

Every November, the whole U.S. prepares for Election Day. The people of the U.S. will be watching the TV, probably CNN, to figure out who will win, whether it be whoever is running for President, or for whoever is running for Senator, or whoever is running for Mayor in a certain town.

In Nigeria, a special Election will be held in February 2023, the Presidential election. In February, Nigeria will have a new President and Vice President, as President Muhammudu Buhari is term-limited and cannot seek re-election. The candidates running for President are businessman Peter Obi, accountant Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Governor of State Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Peter Obi

Obi is a businessman, who also served as governor of Anambra, from March to November 2006, from February to May 2007 and from June 2007 to March 2014. Obi became governor after years of legal battles, but was impeached during his first year. Obi focused on state finances, education and health care during his time as governor. He is also one of the popular picks to become the next President.

Bola Tinubu

Tinubu is an accountant who served as Governor of Lago State from 1999 to 2007 and Senator of Lagos West during the Third Republic in 1993. After studying Accounting in America, at Chicago State University, Tinubu returned to Nigeria in the 1980s and was employed by Mobil Nigeria as their accountant and entered into politics in 1992. During his time as Governor, he tried to modernize Lagos and he feuded with the Peoples Democratic Party. His career has also been plagued by accusations of corruption and questions about his personal history.

Atiku Abubakar

Abubakar is a politician and businessman who served as Vice President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 under the Presidency of Olusegun Obasanjo. He also attempted to run for President multiple times, in 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019. He lost to Muhammadu Buhari twice and Goodluck Jonathan. In May 2022, he was chosen to represent the Peoples Democratic Party as Presidential candidate.

Rabiu Kwankwaso

Kwankwaso is a politician who served as Governor of Kano State from 1999 to 2003 and from 2011 to 2015. He was also appointed Minister of Defence of the Fourth Republic without having any military background from 2003 to 2007, under the Presidency of Obasanjo. He is also leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party.

These are the four main candidates running for President of Nigeria. Who will become the President? We’ll just have to wait and see in February.
