IANA Blog- June 2022

 Happy June,

Happy Sunday, wanted to take some time to reflect on the month, especially hearing of the overwhelming events that have been happening around the world.

June 5th, 2022, in Oakland, I was volunteering for the Nigerian embassy, helping Nigerians in the Bay Area renew their Nigerian passports so that way they can go home and when I look at the news on my phone and I see that there was a Church shooting that happened in Owo, Nigeria.

At least 40 people were killed in the attack. I heard a couple of people at the event talking about what happened, most in disgust. I think I also heard tears coming from another person. I remember seeing it, I was looking in disgust, thinking “this is the last thing Nigeria needs right now.” After hearing about what happened, the first thing that came to my mind

Here in the U.S., we just had to deal with two massive shootings that were all over the news. The shooting that happened in Buffalo, New York on May 14th and the shooting on May 24th in Uvalde, Texas. Both attacks were so newsworthy it had people bringing up gun debates again. I remember eating with my friends and we saw the news on the TV and they were talking about the Uvalde shooting, and someone brought up Mental Health. One of my friends who is originally from Texas got annoyed and said, “If they were gonna focus on Mental Health, then they should’ve done it already!! Don’t just talk about it!” I agreed with him and said, “They didn’t do anything when the Sandy Hook shooting happened. I don’t expect them to do something about this.”

Unfortunately, I kind of have the same feeling after this Massacre happened. These politicians currently running Nigeria who are saying it was “vile and satanic” or they’re sending their thoughts and prayers aren’t gonna do a damn thing about it. Even saw Buhari condemn it saying it was a “heinous attack on worshipers” and I already know he ain’t gonna do anything about it. This tragedy is on his hands as far as I’m concerned…along with the other politicians who are in charge of the Nation’s insecurity.

Hopefully, when Election Day comes in Nigeria, change will happen.
